Liberia, Congo Sunday

Fans Encouraged To Lend Support

With barely three days for the Liberia and Congo duel in continuation of the joint 2006 Nation Cup and World Cup qualifiers, the Ministry of Youth and Sports have issued a statement urging fans to turnout in their numbers to cheer the national team to victory on Sunday at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports in Paynersville.

In a statement read by the director of Pubic Affairs at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Mohammed Kamara expressed thanks and appreciation for the support given the team in the past, and expressed regret over the ugly incident during the Liberia/Senegal clash on October 10, 2004 at the SKD Sports in Paynersville, which led to the Lone Star attracting a fine of (US$10,000) by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The Uninspiring Lone Star Kids

He then used the occasion to caution fans not to get involved in unsporting behavior that could endanger the development of football in the country and warned them never to urinate in cans and throw same on the playing pitch.

The MYS Public Affair Director further urged fans to show respect to the National Team players and officials. Ticket stubs he said should be kept, as a thorough check will be carried out to make sure tickets are bought by all who have entered to witness the match.

He however expressed optimism that this time round, security protection will be more vigorous than previous matches, the Statement concluded.

The Lone Star with a complete home-based squad will play host to the Red Devils of Congo in a match that is virtually academic. But, in spite of its ill-fated nature the locals are desperate to make history as they aim to show that football here on the local scene is not in the doldrums as many claim.

For more on the match read “The Analyst Sports” tomorrow, Saturday 18, 2005.
