Reference: Request for Witness David Sayweh’s Arrest
Dear Minister Banks:
We present to you our compliments and wish to congratulate you for your preferment as Minister of Justice amid the serious constraints facing the justice system in this country and your uncompromising resolve to addressing these concerns.
Having meticulously followed and witnessed proceedings at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission as regards to finding a forward march after years of brutality and rampant pillaging of the nation’s resources by a select few, we request that your ministry take every important step in protecting this catharsis aimed at reconciling our country and to provide moral guidance to the ending of the process.
On January 8, 2008, witness David Sayweh took a solemn oath at the Centennial Memorial Pavilion in Monrovia and before thousands of Liberians and the TRC and testified that Liberian singer, Michael Davies alias Sunnigar Dearboy ordered the raping of his sister during the heat of the Liberian civil war. He continued by saying that his sister died as the result of that gang raping later and was calling on the TRC to recommend prosecution for the alleged perpetrator.
Conversely on April 13, 2008, three months after the hearing, witness Sayweh had an elaborate press conference in Monrovia and alleged that he took USD 100.00 from TRC commissioner Massa Amelia Washington to lie on Michael Davies. A proof to this is with the Truth FM radio and its Real TV3 station.
In view of the adverse, we call the Ministry of Justice to immediately and unconditionally arrest witness Sayweh for undermining the works of the commission and for perjury. We find it very disturbing that when millions of dollars of taxpayers’ money have been expended to assist the process, some persons with malicious minds are planning to deride the entire process.
Until then, we look forward to your actions consistent with section 12.30 of the New Penal Law of Liberia approved July 19, 1976 and as amended September 19, 1986.
Best regards,
Sincerely yours,
M. Boakai Jaleiba, Jr
