Muslim Youth Alarms Over US$50K

The Youth Wing of the National Muslim Council of Liberia has alarmed over an alleged ongoing clandestine action of some officials at the Ministries of Youth & Sports and Finance and a Islamic Youth organization known as Coalition of Islamic Youth Organization of Liberia, (CIYOL) relative to the disbursement of US$ 50,000.00 allotted in the 2012/2013 fiscal year budget.

Making the disclosure at a news conference in Monrovia on Wednesday, February 20, 2013, the Policy Consultant of the Youth Wing, Mr. A. Ambulah Mamey said the money is being wired via transfer # 264114 and described as “TRANSFER TO THE MUSLIM ORGANIZATION FOR THE YOUTH.”

The National Muslim Youth Policy Consultant told journalists yesterday that the move by both ministries, if not averted, will undermine unification and collaboration gains recorded by Muslim Youths and Youth organizations.

“If the disbursement  of said funds and usage does not give due consideration to its ambiguous nature that now demands the full participation of all registered Muslim Youth organizations in the country."

"The allotment, whose ambiguous description, as mentioned above, does not clearly mention the Muslim organization whose Youth should receive the funds has delayed its disbursement and subsequent usage in addressing mountains of challenges Muslim Youth and Youth organizations are faced with.”

Mr. Mamey said, while the Youth Wing was working vigorously to bring all registered Muslim Youth Organizations under an Ad-hoc Muslim Youth Secretariat for the purpose of cohesion in requesting and expanding the now controversial government subsidy, some officials at the Ministry of Youth & Sports as well as Ministry of Finance were covertly working with CIYOL- a Desk Member of the Youth Wing of the National Muslim Council of Liberia posting as representative of Liberia Muslim Youth.

Demanding thoughtfulness from the architects and collaborating partners pursuing this ‘ugly’ cause, the Youth Wing strongly detested the “anti unification strategy creeping among Muslim Youth” and condemned MYS secret acceptance and ongoing processing of a request for the funds for CIYOL.

The group described the Ministry’s action as appalling and betraying, the alleged pending action by MYS, while negotiation talks organized by the same ministry among Muslim Youth organizations have not concluded, combined with the silence of the Ministry of Finance, after it was officially briefed on the matter.

“All of these are sufficient reasons for our conclusion that there exists a clandestine collusion between some officials of both Ministries and the Muslim Youth organization posting as representative of Liberia Muslim Youth, Mr. Mamey had told journalists yesterday.

Meanwhile, in line with its mandate and responsibility to, among other things, establish and maintain a perpetual cohesion among Muslim Youth & Youth Organizations as they endeavor to explore avenues for their academic and economic empowerment, the Youth Wing of the National Muslim Council of Liberia is calling on all registered Muslim Youth organizations in Liberia to  join hands in the establishment of the Ad-hoc National Muslim Youth Secretariat so as to enhance the peaceful and participatory collection and expenditure of the US$50,000.00 subsidy.

The Ad-hoc National Muslim Youth Secretariat, when established, will be a Body of representatives from ALL registered Muslim Youth Organizations in Liberia whose leadership will be determined by its membership. The mandate of the secretariat will be to direct the subsidy into programs that will provide holistic solutions to some of the challenges Young Muslims in Liberia are faced with.

When contacted via cellular phone yesterday, the Director of Communications at the MYS, Mr. McCauley Paykue said averred that the Ministry has not and will not disburse any portion of the controversial US$50,000.00 until all ambiguity surrounding it is resolved.

The Ministry of Finance has since denied ever disbursing any funds intended for Muslim Youths of Liberia.

The Executive Director of CIYOL, Mr. Alley Sylla could not be reach for comment, as his mobile phone rang endlessly without any response; even in the event where a text message was sent to him on the issue.
